Born and raised in West-Berlin as a son of artists and squatters, Bill Petry came in contact with his parents' record collection at an early age.

At the age of 8, he became a member of the Staats- and Domchor Berlin, under the direction of Prof. Christian Grube.  At the same time, he taught himself to play the piano.

Bill started playing the trumpet at the age of 13, and with 15 he was accepted as a member the Berlin Youth Jazz Orchestra.  Later he took lessons with Prof. Malte Burba and Till Brönner.

Bill Petry studied trumpet with Prof. Gerard Presencer at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler", later "Jazz Institute Berlin" and took lessons with Prof. Peter Weniger, Prof. Jiggs Whigham, Prof. David Friedman and Greogoire Peters, among others.

Bill then continued his studies with Prof. Till Brönner and Prof. Malte Burba at the Music Conservatory "Carl Maria von Weber" in Dresden.
